The SBL officially announced its 2018 fixtures on Wednesday, with the S&K Electrical Geraldton Buccaneers opening the season with a road trip double-header against reigning premiers the Perth Redbacks and the East Perth Eagles.

Ray Evans’ men play four of their first five matches away from Activewest Stadium, with their opening home game against the Rockingham Flames on Saturday, March 24, at 7.30pm.

The Buccs will have a general bye over Easter in week three, before returning to Perth a week later for games against Willetton and Kalamunda.

Former Buccaneers import Dwayne Benjamin could return to Activewest Stadium to face his old side on Saturday, April 14, when his Wolves are in town to play the Buccs.

The final game of the regular season could hold play-off implications, when the Buccs host Willetton — a team who hold no fear of coming into Activewest Stadium and winning.

On being briefed on the draw, Evans said it was a “tough one” in parts, but still provided plenty of challenges for his squad. “At the start of the season and towards the end of the season, teams often chop and change a little bit,” he said. “They hit form and other teams you think are going to do well — a bit like East Perth last year — for whatever reason, confidence is down and they lose momentum.“On paper, it obviously looks like a tough start — going up against the Redbacks first game, but it’s also very exciting as well. “We get to go up against the reigning premiers away, so it will be a great hit-out to start the season.”

The SBL’s Pre-Season Blitz tournament will be held over March 3-4 at the Warwick Basketball Stadium, which will be the Buccs’ first official outing of the 2018 campaign.
